Meet Milo

Breed: Shih Tzu

Barking from: Auckland

What's up dog?

Ive had Milo for just over a year now. During this time we were dealing with covid so Milo would accompany me to vaccination events as I was helping get the vaccination rate up in our low income communities as their uptake was low. Milo would distract and calm kids down who were being immunised, he also provided a calming influence by kids and people coming and patting him and laughing at his outfits. Seeing their reaction and how much Milo enjoyed being out in the community I would take him to many more events. He goes along to the youth basketball, he walks around town centre at night with me to see which kids are out when they should be at home, he helps Police with community engagement. During the floods he was based with me at the evacuation shelter providing a calming presence for children affected by the floods. He also helps me with delivering food parcels, doing safety wardens work at community events like recently with the Matariki light trail greeting everyone who came by. He was also asked to help promote dogs on buses by Auckland Transport so he came with me to do tv interviews. When there are major issues Milo is with me in the community. When there was a shooting in the neighbourhood, the tv news item showed Milo and I walking along the street as I wanted people to see its still safe as I had heard people were too scared to leave their homes. I know there are lots of dogs out there doing great work. The St Johns therapy dogs are a perfect example which Milo tried to join but he is reactive to other dogs so hasnt had the chance yet to go out on a visit with them. However Milo enjoys being out in community, at holiday programmes, visiting schools he just loves it, so thank you for the chance to put him forward for his work in the community. I dont expect him to win but appreciated the chance to share my pride of having this little dog accompany me and seeing the joy he brings others which Im so lucky to be able to enjoy everyday with him. Thank you for having this award competition so people can be encouraged to be proud of their pets and others can see how valued they are and hopefully helps promote to others in society to value their pets.
